Adjustments Made Due to Weather

Chicago, IL- Due to a Severe Winter Weather Warning in New York state issued by the National Weather Service in the past 48 hrs, the PBL has had to make several schedule adjustments for the safety of the players traveling this weekend.

One change for this weekend is this Sunday's PBL game of the week, which will now feature the Buffalo 716ers against the Rochester RazorSharks in Rochester. Snowed in on Friday, the 716ers were unable to travel to Florence for their showdown against the Vipers. The originally scheduled game between the RazorSharks and the Philadelphia Flight as well as the game between the 716ers and the Vipers will be rescheduled for a later date.

"Our decision to move these games around is for the safety of our players. We had anticipated such weather delays and have planned accordingly to make sure we get every game in this season." said Dennis Truax when asked about the weekend weather delays.

RazorSharks to Host Flight In Their First Visit to BCA

 

Rochester, NY - This weekend the Rochester RazorSharks prepare for their second game against the winless Philadelphia Flight (0-3), who will make their first appearance in the Blue Cross Arena against the strongest fans in the league.

 

The RazorSharks, who remain undefeated, will need another strong defensive showing as well as high offensive momentum to come up with two more wins against Philadelphia this weekend. In their first match up, the RazorSharks finished with a 122-109 win after dominant play from point guard Kyle Randall who finished with six assists and led the game in scoring (20 points).  With starting point guard Jerice Crouch day-to-day battling a hamstring injury, Randall might be needed for another big game to lead the RazorSharks back court.  

 

The Philadelphia Flight are in their inaugural season in the PBL, and despite their 0-3 record they have put up a strong fight in each game by scoring at least 94 points in every game this season.  

 

The RazorSharks are coming off an intense 106-86 win over the Buffalo 716ers and will definitely have the charge they need to defeat a team that shows a strong offensive front. Pee Dee Vipers “Layups, Dunks & Rock ‘n Roll” Game Night

Vipers take on the Buffalo 716ers Saturday night followed by a post-game concert.

 

Florence, SC – January 7, 2015 – The Pee Dee Vipers (5-1) are on a five game winning streak and hope to add another “W” against Buffalo (3-2) this Saturday, January 10 at 7:30 PM at the Florence Civic Center (FCC). The Vipers are currently second in the Premier Basketball League and in the Eastern Conference behind the Rochester RazorSharks. Pee Dee is coming off two big back-to-back wins against the Philadelphia Flight. The 716ers beat the Lynchburg Titans by 61 points at home this past Saturday but lost to Rochester on Sunday, 106-86.

“Buffalo is one of the best teams in the league and especially in our conference. They have about the same team from last year, a team that won a lot, so this has to be our best game yet,” General Manager Sharone Wright.

The Vipers welcome back dunking all-star Cameron Butler this Saturday. Butler, a 6’7 guard and forward from Missouri State University will make his return debut against Buffalo. Butler was training with the NBA D-League Texas Legends during the off-season and the beginning of the Vipers’ season.

Butler averaged 7.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, one steal and one block per game last season with Pee Dee. Most importantly, Butler brought a tough, loud and unbeatable attitude to the court.

“Cameron was one of our best players at the end of the season last year. He brings excitement, skill and incredible athletic ability to the squad. He fits right in our scheme and we’re all thrilled to have him back,” said Wright.  Julius Francis has been waived to make room for Butler.

Concert Details:

Fans get ready for a rockin’ good time following the game! The Vipers are bringing you a special performance by Johnny Corbett and Evan Lee. Corbett is the lead singer for Fallen Child and Lee is the lead guitarist for Tastes Like Chicken. Both artists have performed for years in the Pee Dee region and have won awards such as the Harley Davidson Battle of The Bands in 2012 and in 2013 the Hard Rock Café “Hard Rock Rising” honor.

Halftime and Prize Details:

As part of the Vipers “Rock ‘n Roll” game night, fans can play musical chairs at halftime. The halftime is a contest for kids or adults, but be warned: twists are involved! Folks can sign up at the merchandise table on the main floor when they arrive. Participants will be called during the 2nd quarter. Prizes include tickets to our next game and merchandise.

Fans can also win a $20 Top Wash gift card to Tidal Wave Auto Spa during the game (get ready to do “the wave”). The famous t-shirt and giveaway toss takes place during 3rd quarter change.

Storm Ready for Inaugural Match Against Lima Express

Racine, WI- The Racine Storm will host the Lima (Ohio) Express on Saturday, January 10th at 7:00pm in what could potentially be a matter of first or third.

The Storm have not been in action since December 28th when they defeated the Danville Riverhawks on the road, 145-125.

Leading the Storm will be Anthony Spencer who has 27.2-points per game and 49 total rebounds in five games this season.

The first 50 fans in attendance for Saturday's game will receive free admission and popcorn.   All other fans will be admitted for a discounted price of $2.



PBL Issues Disciplinary Fines on Bloomington Flex



Chicago, IL- The Premier Basketball League continues their disciplinary action against the Bloomington Flex, formerly of the PBL, who during last year’s playoffs did not show to participate in the final championship series.

As a result of violating the league’s rules and regulations in failure to appear for their best-of-three championship series against the Rochester RazorSharks in 2014, the PBL has proceeded with legal actions against the Flex by fining them $50,000 per game, resulting in a $150,000 total fine. After today the Bloomington Flex have exhausted all of their appeals and the PBL has moved forward with enforcing the fine by retaining the services of the firm Armstrong & Cox Inc.

“The rules are in place to protect the league and its fans to best avoid any situations similar to what they (Flex) did,” stated league commissioner Dennis Truax.

The Flex were suspended from competitive play in the PBL for the 2014-15 season and can reapply to join the league for the 2015-16 season.

 



PBL Delays Games Due to Unsafe Weather Conditions



Chicago, IL- Due to a Severe Winter Weather Warning in New York issued by the National Weather Service, I-90 and other major roads are closed to all traffic in both directions causing an issue for the RazorSharks road game against the Flight. Therefore, tonight’s game between Rochester and Philadelphia will be postponed.

For similar reasons, the Premier Basketball League is keeping an eye on weather delay updates for Saturday’s game between the Buffalo 716ers and the Carolina Pee Dee Vipers. The game is currently still expected to start at 7:30 on Saturday.  

The Danville Riverhawks will not travel to Michigan for their game tonight against the Grand Rapids Cyclones due to severe weather conditions east of Lake Michigan.

“We extended the length of our season this year just for situations like this,” said Dennis Truax on the weather delays. “We cannot stress enough the importance of our teams, players and fans safety, so rather than put anyone in danger, we would rather just schedule these games for another day.”

 


Week 5 Brings Change in Leaderboard With Surprise Victories
 


Buffalo Trounces Titans at Home
 
BUFFALO, NY — The Buffalo 716ers defeated the Lynchburg Titans for the second time this season with a 141 - 80 win in front of a loud sold out crowd at the Thunderdome at Tapestry Charter School.
 
With this victory the 716ers improve to 3-2, while the Titans drop to 0-5 for the season.
 
Guard Shaun Fenner was named the Subway Eat Fresh MVP of the game.  Fenner scored 8 points, had 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists.
 
“I appreciate the fans coming out today and supporting the Buffalo 716ers, and I really appreciate being a part of this great team.  I just came out and played my hardest, and we came out with a victory today,” said Fenner.
 
This game saw five players score at least 10 or more points: Johnny Marsh (20), Robert McKiver (15), Glenroy Carr (16), and Travonta Gatewood (10).  Carr led the team in rebounds with 14.
 
The 716ers travel to Rochester tomorrow to play the Razorsharks at 1 pm.
 
 

RiverHawks Sink Admirals 132­-126

Danville, IL- The Danville RiverHawks wrapped up a three-game homestand winning two out of three games and knocking off the leaders of the the PBL Midwest Division.

Saturday night the Lake Michigan Admirals came to town looking to repeat their dominance from the two teams first meeting in which the Admirals embarrassed the RiverHawks 131-95.

This time around the RiverHawks were looking for redemption and appeared to be up for the challenge defeating the Admirals 132-126 with six players finishing the game in double figures.

Leading the way for the RiverHawks was guard Cedric Ridle who finished with a game-high 31 points and five assists. Second round PBL draft pick of the RiverHawks Jerron Jamerson also had a strong performance with 27 points and six rebounds.

For the Admirals, Nicolas Waddell had double-double with 30 points and 17 rebounds. Troy Taylor also chipped in 23 points and six rebounds.

On Friday January 9th, the RiverHawks will travel to Grand Rapids to take to the 1-4 Cyclones.

 
 
 
Vipers Leave a Painful Sting in Visiting Flight
 

Florence, S.C. – The Carolina Pee Dee Vipers (5-1) beat the Philadelphia Flight (0-3) for the second time last night with a final score of 109-96 at the Florence Civic Center.

Pee Dee hoped to see another stellar performance from its top scorer, Tahj Tate, combined with bigger numbers from other key players. However, Tate injured his knee in practice, and was limited to playing throughout the game.  The Vipers’ key defensive man, Shakir Johnson also had a slight back injury.

It was clear that even though the Vipers’ best offensive and defensive players were hurt, the team could still pull out a win.

A high success rate of shots from the top of the arc left the Vipers in the lead at the end of the first by a score of 27-19. 

The Flight kept its momentum going from the end of the first into the second and narrowed the Vipers’ lead to 29-25. Flight would take a 51-50 lead with less than one second remaining in the second quarter. 

The third quarter served as a back-and-forth affair, much like last week’s game - large runs by the Flight and small spurts from the Vipers.  With 1:15 remaining in the third quarter, Tate lifted a free throw to regain the lead 70-69 for the Vipers.

Pee Dee found their momentum late in the fourth quarter as they pulled away from the Flight. Casey Walker dropped five 3s on the Flight, including one from a few feet behind the key and three of which were made during the last few minutes of the game.  Anthony Poindexter came up with four 3s in crucial moments throughout the game for the Vipers.  The joint efforts from all of the Vipers players held as the key factor in the 109- 96 victory over the Flight.

“I thought Casey Walker and Niko Brooks did well this game, despite Tahj receiving a lack of playing time due to his injury during practice, the team came together and won the game,” Vipers coach Andre Bovain said.  

Walker had a game-high 29 points; Poindexter scored 23 points and had 6 rebounds; Brooks put up 17 points with 9 assists; PBL Rookie of the Year, Jamal Francis racked up 14 points; Tate scored 11; Johnson blocked 3 shots and rebounded another 3.

When asked about the status of Tate’s injury, Bovain mentioned that he “…looked like he was not getting enough lift on his shot, so our trainers will have a look at him later next week.”

The Flight had standout performances from: Charles Swiggett with 17 points; Kenny Sharpe had 22, Denzel Jackson and Russell Johnson both put up 17. The four players combined for 19 rebounds of the team’s 25.

“Johnson and Jackson make it go for them.  Sharpe did a great job of attacking the basket and Swiggett performed great all-around,” Bovain on the Flight’s top players.

The Vipers host the Buffalo 716ers at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, January 10.  Former Vipers’ player – and dunking all-star – Cameron Butler makes his return.

 

 

RazorSharks Start the New Year Perfect After Victory Over 716ers

Rochester, NY- It’s a rare opportunity that a team can come in on the road and make the Rochester RazorSharks nervous to lose at home.

Today’s game against the rival Buffalo 716ers wasn’t any different. The RazorSharks had that nervous feeling against the 716ers in game one between the two rival teams a couple weeks when the RazorSharks finally took the lead to win 108-95 a couple weeks ago.

In a 106-86 victory over the 716ers, the RazorSharks never let go of the lead after starting off on top nice and early in the first quarter.

The RazorSharks move on to 5-0 and remain in first place of the PBL East and one game ahead of the second place Carolina Pee Dee Vipers. The Buffalo 716ers fall to 3-3 and hold on to the third place spot in the East.

Jerice Crouch led the RazorSharks on the scoring front with a whopping 27 points, followed by Kyle Randall who posted 17 points.

On the other side of the ball, former RazorSharks Robert McKiver was expected to be the key for the 716ers today, but it was Antonio Speed who led the 716ers in scoring with 26 points.

On Friday, January 9th the RazorSharks will travel to the city of brotherly love where they will face off against the winless Philadelphia Flight.

 

 

Indianapolis Moves Up After Defeating Grand Rapids

Indianapolis, IN- The Indianapolis Diesels outlasted the Grand Rapids Cyclones 114-109 in a battle of the Midwest division last place teams. The lead switched hands throughout the game with the Diesels finally capturing the advantage for good in the final minute thanks to a 7-0 run.
 
Indianapolis forward Brandon McGee hit two free throws to put his team up 111-109. The Cyclones were unable to score on the next possession and fouled McGee to send him to the line again with 7.3 seconds left. After connecting on the first free throw, McGee missed the next but was aided by an offensive rebound from Diesels guard Harry Marshall. Marshall was fouled with 4.6 seconds left and made both free throws to ice the contest.
 
The Cyclones (1-4) had the lead at halftime 48-46, but lost ground in a high scoring third quarter as the Diesels led 79-76. Indianapolis (2-3) would enjoy its highest advantage of the game in the fourth quarter at 98-92 before the Cyclones went on a spurt of their own. Guard P. Nelson, one of the smallest players on the court, had big baskets to put Grand Rapids ahead at 105-104 at the 2:30 mark. Grand Rapids would led 109-107 but did not score a point in the final 90 seconds.
 
Marshall would lead all scorers with 30 points for Indianapolis as four teammates would score double figures in McGee, Wickware, McClure and Cummings. McGee and McClure would reach double figures in rebounds.
 
Jody Hill led the Cyclones with 26 points and assisted with 22 points from Tyler Kruis and 18 from Josh Chichester.
 

The win snapped a two game losing streak for the Diesels, who remain undefeated at home dating back multiple seasons.

 

 

Hurricane Defeat the Titans in Last Minute Thriller

Erie, PA- The Erie Hurricane post its second win of the season after surviving a thrilling comeback attempt by the Lynchburg Titans (130-128).

The three headed attack of T. Jackson, (44 pts ), C. Dixon (33 pts) and L. Jones (30 pts), proved to be enough to weather the storm and edge the slight victory over the last place Titans.

Damien Hubbard led the Titans with 37 points, followed by Kenny Hunt with 36 points.

The Lynchburg Titans overcame a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to cut Erie's lead to two points ending the third period. The offensive battle continued in the fourth quarter with each team trading basket for basket, but in the final second, Erie survived a last second three-point attempt by Hubbard of the Titans, falling just short of the basket.

The Erie Hurricane remain in fourth of the PBL East after improving to 2-2 on the season, while the Lynchburg Titans fell to 0-6. 



Weather Issues Postpone Lima Racine Match



Chicago, IL- Today’s game between the Racine Storm and the Lima Express has been officially postponed due to severe weather.

The Express were set to host the Storm on Sunday, January 4th in Lima, Ohio, but due to unsafe weather conditions the game will be postponed to a later date.

"It's all about the safety of our organizations, their fans and their players first," stated PBL Commissioner Dennis Truax.

A make-up date will be announced once it is confirmed.

Buffalo 716ers Have Busy Weekend With Two Games This Weekend.
 
Buffalo, NY —  Fans of professional basketball in Buffalo have two opportunities to support their home team this weekend. The Buffalo 716ers host the Lynchburg Titans on Saturday, January 3rd, at 2 pm.  This game will be played at Tapestry Charter School.  On Sunday, January 4th the 716ers travel to Rochester to face the Razorsharks at 1 pm for a nationally televised game.
 
The Buffalo 716ers have signed two players to their roster since they last played on December 21st.
 
The 716ers have signed 6’0” guard Jerrold Brooks, a 2014 graduate from Southern Mississippi University.  While at Southern Mississippi he scored 729 points, had 159 rebounds and 172 assists in 71 games for the Golden Eagles.
 
The 716ers have also signed 5’10” guard Brandon Caruthers, a 2014 graduate from the State University at New York, Brockport.  Caruthers, a health science major at Brockport, finished his basketball career averaging 12.9 points per game in 28 games played for the Golden Eagles. He scored 362 points as a guard for the Brockport Golden Eagles. Caruthers was instrumental in Brockport's come from behind victory over SUNY Plattsburgh to claim the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Championship. Caruthers scored nine points over the final three minutes, including making two free-throws with 2 seconds left in the game.
                
The 2013-2014 Brockport men's basketball team finished the regular season with a 24-3 record, earning a bid to the Division III National Basketball Tournament. Brockport fell to Morrisville State 83-80 in triple overtime in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
 
Both Caruthers and Brooks will play their first professional basketball game on Saturday when the 716ers host the Lynchburg Titans.  The 716ers defeated the Titans 127 - 82 in their first meeting of the season.
 
On Sunday the 716ers travel to Rochester to play the Razorsharks at 1 pm, in a nationally televised game.  Both the Soul of the South network and ESPN3 will broadcast this game.

Riverhawks Look for Vengeance in Rematch Against Admirals

Danville, IL- When the Danville Riverhawks traveled on the road to play against the Lake Michigan Admirals on December 13th, the ending result was something they would like to forget.

In game one of the series, the hosting Admirals embarrassed the Riverhawks 131-95. Leading the Admirals scoring front was Nicholas Waddell with 31 points and seven offensive rebounds to help give his team second and third scoring opportunities.

However, this score is a little misleading of a fair and even matchup between the two Midwest division teams because the Riverhawks were without star player, Cedric Ridle, who was out with a broken hand. Ridle, who is still battling with a broken hand, recently scored his season-high 36 points against the Grand Rapids Cyclones, who is the only team to defeat the Admirals for the 2014-15 season.

With the return of Ridle, this series could turn in the Riverhawks favor.

Saturday's game starts at 7pm at the David S. Palmer Arena where tickets are still available and can be purchased at the box office.

 

 

Vipers Welcome the Return of Cameron Butler Against Philadelphia

Florence, SC – The Pee Dee Vipers (4-1) rematch against the Philadelphia Flight this Saturday, January 3 at 7:30 PM at the Florence Civic Center (FCC). They beat the Flight – a new team to the Premier Basketball League’s Eastern Conference – 96-94 this past Saturday in a down-to-the-last-minute thriller.

Several Pee Dee players made key stops, blocks and shots to defeat Philadelphia. Tahj Tate had 36 points and 6 assists; Anthony Poindexter put up 21 points and grabbed 6 rebounds; Niko Brooks scored 13 points with 5 assists and 2 steals; Shakir Johnson blocked 3 shots and pulled down 16 rebounds; Casey Walker had 14 rebounds.

If you missed this past weekend’s game, you do not want to miss round two against the Flight! “I think that we’re going to come out with a lot of energy and excitement feeding off from the fans and what happened last game,” said Vipers’ Head Coach Andre Bovain. “Tate and Poindexter will again be our one-two punch – plays that are efficient but even more thrilling to watch. This game will be fun to be a part of; both teams have NBA-caliber players and both teams adrenaline valves are running high.”

Erie Hurricane Host the Last Place Lynchburg Titans    
 

Erie, PA– The Erie Hurricane of the Premier Basketball League (PBL) are hosting the Lynchburg Titans on January 4th. 

The Hurricane are looking to obtain their second win of the season against the Titans (0-4) and hoping to move into third place in the PBL East. The last time the Hurricane hit the floor was back on December 14th when the Hurricane defeated the Buffalo 716ers 122-117.  Lester Jones scored 42 points for the Hurricane. Troy Jackson chipped 38 points in the win. So they will be looking to brush off some rusty game-action as where the Titans have been quite active after dropping two games to the Vipers recently.

Rochester RazorSharks Look for Perfect Start of New Year

Rochester, NY- The undefeated Rochester RazorSharks are on the verge of opening up the season with a five-game winning streak, but first they have to defeat the Buffalo 716ers in a rematch of what was a battle for first in the PBL East.

The Rochester RazorSharks are coming off a 125-74 dominating victory on Monday night against the Lynchburg Titans and seem to have all the momentum they need to continue their current winning streak, but before that the RazorSharks nearly fell to the Buffalo 716ers.

The RazorSharks secured first place in the PBL East after defeating the 716ers on December 21st thanks to a strong defensive effort from Anthony Stover who blocked seven shots and pulled down 14 rebounds, which helped lead them to their 13-point victory.

Stover would go on to be named the PBL Player of the Week for his performance in such a critical game.

In order to win their first game of the New Year, the RazorSharks will need to slow down former teammate, Robert McKiver, who currently leads the 716ers in scoring with 24 points per game. This will also be the 716ers first game since their devastating loss when the two last met before Christmas.

Lima Express Host the Aggressive Racine Storm in a Battle for Second in the Midwest

LIMA, Ohio --- On Sunday, January 4th, it's another battle between two Midwest Division teams as the Racine Storm travels southeast to take on the Lima Express. Tip-off will be at 2:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.

The Express are looking to add another 'W' to their win column after coming off an impressive victory against the Cyclones 121-92 in Grand Rapids, Michigan last weekend.

This game will mark the fourth home game for the Express this season where they have been awfully impressive so far this season. They currently have a home record of 2-1, and is a perfect 1-0 on the road. 

Currently the Express are 3-1 coming into this match-up, while Racine stands a half a game behind them with a record of 3-2.

This is the first ever meeting between the two teams, as Racine is in their inaugural season in the Premier Basketball League.

New Year, New Rivalry, New Beginnings
 

Indianapolis, IN- Sunday marks the first time in that the Indianapolis Diesels will be nationally broadcasted on ESPN3.

The Indianapolis Diesels will host the new Midwest division expansion team, the Grand Rapids Cyclones for the first time and they for the former Midwest Division champs, it couldn't come sooner.

The Diesels (1-3) currently sit tied for last place in the Midwest division with the Danville Riverhawks and the Grand Rapids Cyclones. So, a victory here could be huge for the Diesels in their push to repeat last year's success.

The Diesels have also brought on a stronger looking squad to help them reach this feat. The addition of 6'8" forward Brandon McGee is a great sign for a quick turn-around. Last season McGee was the team leader in scoring and was second on the team in rebounds.

The Diesels have also added Antonio Cannon, a 6'0" guard local Indiana star player.
